Join our team

Kmart is modernising and optimising our international supply chain systems to enhance efficiency, reduce operational costs, improve safety for our teams, and deliver products faster to almost 500 stores across Australia and New Zealand.

We are building the next generation of retail supply chain technology, with a strong focus on warehouse management, transport and logistics, inventory optimisation, demand and forecasting systems — and now, new capabilities that allow us to trace products from their place of manufacture all the way to our local Distribution Centres.

As a Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in architecting, building, and scaling these end‑to‑end product‑tracking solutions in a cloud environment. You’ll leverage deep engineering expertise, primarily in Java Spring Boot microservices, and ensure our systems meet high standards of reliability, performance, testing, and security. You will influence technical direction, uplift engineering practices, and work closely with product, architecture, and operational teams to create technology that supports one of Australia’s largest retail supply chains.

What you’ll be doing

  • Designing, building, and maintaining high‑quality microservices and backend systems using Java Spring Boot.
  • Leading the development of solutions that track products across international suppliers, freight networks, and Distribution Centres.
  • Ensuring strong testing, validation, and security practices across all services and integrations.
  • Working with AWS and cloud‑native technologies to deliver scalable and resilient solutions.
  • Collaborating with cross‑functional teams and contributing to architectural planning and technical design.
  • Driving best practice across CI/CD, automation, observability, and engineering standards.
  • Participating in code reviews, mentoring engineers, and contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Working within Agile delivery frameworks and supporting a healthy, high‑performing engineering culture.

To be successful in this role you’ll have:

  • Significant experience developing backend systems using Java 17+ and Spring Boot.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservice patterns, and event‑driven architectures.
  • Practical experience with relational databases and data modelling for scalable, transactional systems.
  • Hands‑on experience with CI/CD and automation, ideally with GitHub Actions.
  • Exposure to monitoring and alerting platforms such as SumoLogic or NewRelic.
  • Knowledge of AWS cloud services and cloud‑native design principles.
  • Experience developing or integrating with supply chain, logistics, or retail systems is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with React or modern JavaScript frameworks is advantageous but not required.
  • Experience working in Agile teams using SCRUM or KANBAN delivery approaches.
  • Ability to guide and mentor other engineers, contribute to architectural decisions, and uplift standards.

Perks and benefits we’ll offer you:

  • Flexible hybrid working options through our Flex Where, Flex When, Flex Well policy, spending 60% of your week in our National Office
  • We’ll provide multiple ways for you to learn from online micro-credentialing in Udemy, support to gain certifications to tech community events and more.
