We are looking for a Head of Health & Safety to join our team, providing enterprise-wide leadership across Kmart Group’s large-scale, geographically dispersed retail store network, distribution centres and support functions.

This role operates as a senior leader of leaders in a high-volume, frontline operational environment, setting the strategic direction and accountability for how work health and safety, risk management, injury management and governance frameworks are embedded into day-to-day operations at scale.

You will play a critical role in ensuring safe, consistent and scalable systems of work, while enabling strong operational and commercial outcomes. As the senior functional lead, you will partner closely with the Executive Leadership Team, providing expert advice, assurance and insight on critical safety risks, regulatory obligations and emerging trends.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide leadership across safety, risk, workers compensation, return-to-work and wellbeing, ensuring consistent and scalable systems of work
  • Act as the organisational authority on critical safety risks, influencing senior leaders across Stores, DCs and Corporate functions
  • Establish and maintain robust governance, assurance and compliance frameworks to manage physical and psychosocial risks
  • Own workers compensation, claims performance and return-to-work outcomes across the Group
  • Lead serious incident response and crisis management, ensuring effective escalation, investigation and organisational learning
  • Act as the primary interface with regulators and external authorities, managing inspections, investigations and enforcement matters
  • Provide executive-level leadership and communication during high-risk or high-consequence events
  • Translate risk insights into practical interventions, investment decisions and operational improvements that reduce harm and improve performance
  • Oversee safety budgets and allocate investment aligned to risk, impact and operational priorities
  • Leverage data, reporting and KPIs (including TRIFR and leading indicators) to drive decision making and continuous improvement
  • Ensure learnings from incidents, audits and data insights are embedded into improved systems, processes and controls
  • Lead and develop a high-performing health and safety function, building capability, succession and leadership across safety-critical roles

To be successful in this role you’ll have:

  • Extensive senior leadership experience in health and safety within a large, complex, operationally intensive environment (e.g. retail, logistics or manufacturing)
  • Proven track record of improving safety performance, reducing injury and claims outcomes, and embedding sustainable systems of work
  • Deep expertise in Australian and New Zealand WHS legislation, compliance, assurance and regulatory frameworks, including psychosocial risk obligations
  • Demonstrated experience leading serious incident investigations, crisis response and regulator engagement
  • Strong capability in enterprise risk management, governance and assurance, including physical and psychosocial hazards
  • Experience working with Executive Leadership Teams and governance forums, providing risk-based advice and assurance
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop multidisciplinary teams, building capability and succession pipelines
  • Strong commercial acumen, including experience managing budgets and prioritising investment decisions based on risk and impact
  • Advanced analytical capability, with the ability to interpret safety data and translate insights into action
  • A calm, resilient and decisive leadership style, particularly in high-risk, ambiguous or incident-driven environments
